![]() “God may exist,” Hawking told CNN’s Larry King, adding, “but science can explain the universe without the need for a creator.” ![]() “The ‘laws of gravity’ seem to be something other than nothing.”Īs the media frenzy spread from bloggers and tweeters to prime-time television, the authors countered that they never meant to claim that science proved that there is no God. For example, Barron says, the existence of the laws that caused the appearance of the universe must have predated the big bang. Mary of the Lake near Chicago, also complained that the book is philosophically naive. Barron, a theology professor at the University of St. Theologians were incensed, saying that the existence of a creator is by definition outside science’s domain. (An adaptation of the book appeared in the October Scientific American.) ![]() “It is possible to answer these questions purely within the realm of science, and without invoking any divine beings,” the authors wrote. The universe arose “from nothing” courtesy of the force of gravity, and the laws of nature are an accident of the particular slice of universe we happen to inhabit. Physics, the book states, can now explain where the universe came from and why the laws of nature are what they are. ![]() Has Stephen Hawking overreached? The publication in September of The Grand Design, a book the British physicist co-authored with Leonard Mlodinow of Caltech, raised hackles as some saw it as denying the existence of God based on scientific arguments. ![]()

5/21/2023 0 Comments Av geiger![]() ![]() I remember texting my friend who read the book a few days before me how much Nora was frustrating me. I think if it wasn't for the mental intrigue I would have given the book a little bit of a lower rating considering I spent the entire book yelling at Nora to be brave. This book was very interesting to me because it involved a lot of coding and computer work which I am very fond of. ![]() All she has to do is fight off that first loves ex-girlfriend with the same name as her but that might prove to be easier than she thought. Nora enters the program with an idea to build something unique but somehow she gets dragged into the production of these glasses and quite possibly first love. It is a sort of virtual reality in a pair of glasses that also acts as your cell phone so you can send texts and call people. ![]() But something else for the app is in the making and it's being tested during the duration of her summer program. Nora downloads the app right before she arrives at the program so she is an entirely new user in a place where everyone has been using the app for a long time. This prestigious program produced one of the world's most-used apps called Instalove. ![]() Nora just arrived at Winthrop Academy to begin her summer program that she has waited years for. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Olivia and the missing toy book![]() ![]() I don’t mean to offend anybody, but it’s a way of asserting Olivia’s independence. Does her confidence represent your wish that children resist conformism? Olivia wears basic black, models non-Western princess garb, and stands apart from the throng. ![]() The line just sort of came out (no pun intended) and I thought it was funny. Either they didn’t dare or it’s simply a non-issue now. I thought it was pretty spontaneous, or at least articulate enough to be nonscripted.Īs you wrote this manuscript, did you run into any controversy with editors around Olivia identifying “some of the boys” as wanting to be princesses as well, not unlike the child in My Princess Boy? She goes on a rant and says, “Why do boys get all these different things? We all have to get pink!” That made me feel very happy. ![]() But then I saw a viral video of a little girl filmed by her father in a store, in the pink aisle with all the girl stuff. I started the book about a year ago, and I had some doubts. So the book emerged from my frustration with trying to get some good quality stories and dolls and outfits and things that reflected Olivia more than the standard tutu.Īre you at all nervous about how pink devotees will respond to Olivia’s rejection of such accoutrements? In the first book she does a little ballet thing, but it’s not really her character. Pink doesn’t make sense with Olivia because she is not that kind of creature anyway. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Safecracker by Ryan Wick![]() The only thing that frustrated me was the unnecessary plot twist dropped out of left field with no explanation at the very end, so I can only assume a sequel is forthcoming. I’m wondering, though, if Safecracker is meant to be the first novel in a series. I enjoyed going along with Michael’s antics and getting to know Katarina, who initially tried to kill him. ![]() Overall, the story was interesting, though it did take me a while to get into it. Mexican cartels are notoriously gruesome, so naturally, there were a lot of gory, violent scenes that should come with a trigger warning. He survives, only to find himself in the crosshairs of an assassin who works for a dangerous Mexican cartel with the FBI on their tail. The story starts off with Michael getting his throat slit at his favorite corner bar. ![]() Centered on Michael Maven, a professional thief gets caught up in a cartel war when his path crosses with another thief who tries to kill him. Safecracker was a fun adventure to jump into, especially as a nice reprieve from my usual reading genres. Vanessa Len writes YA fantasy about girl anti-heroes, monsters, and enemies who are maybe in love. What good would crying do anyway? She had simply watched Mummy, Penny, and Michael - what was left of the Roberts family in the UK after almost fifty years - carrying on for Jesus as if she'd announced Nicole was dead. That there had been no sign of her since, that Tonye thought it was possible she had drowned in the lagoon. ![]() ![]() Funny, Penny had been the first to cry when Claudine relayed the news about Nicole's disappearance, that she had gone on a boat trip in Lagos and hadn't come back. ![]() ![]() Most societies do not start out, Adams notes, intending to rule as dystopias. Those controlling networks in many stories gradually elaborate upon what we already encounter under the increasing overlap of state with corporation, boss with politician, judge with supervisor. Future systems may be totalitarian or authoritarian, but in many newer contributions, surveillance creeps in via the personal device that may be our iPad or BlackBerry or laptop, a few generations later but with far more efficient apps. He reminds us that, unlike post-apocalyptic stories (another anthology of his), society plays the antagonist, not the protagonist. He defines dystopia from the Greek for “bad + place”. John Joseph Adams, a prolific anthologist of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, introduces his 33 entries from 32 visionaries. They hint at rather than highlight coming danger. Many stories extrapolate from where we are now. Perhaps the impact of 9/11, the Internet and smartphones, and especially the Patriot Act have seared into recent contributors’ imaginations dangers that creep up on these inhabitants of worlds gone wrong. ![]() ![]() Two-thirds of these cautionary tales have been published the past decade all of them regarded as classic stories by leading writers. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Judd by J.D.
